On Saturday 30th April the annual Tiree 10k Fun Run took place in glorious sunshine with plenty of local residents and visitors taking part. There were 173 runners and walkers altogether including Power Pushers and Kids Fun Runners. Once again the Tiree Pipe Band started everyone off along the beach and provided a great setting for the start of the event.

Out on the course the warm weather made it hard for the runners but there were still some fast times with Tim Brand from Lochaber coming over the line first in 36:36 closely followed by Tiree’s Owain Williams in 37:21. Owain has knocked 2 minutes off his time from last year and is running the Edinburgh Marathon later this month. Also finishing strongly was Jennifer MacKinnon in 48:06, which gained her first place in her age group.

The kids events saw the closest finish ever with Colin, Finn and Jack sprinting for the line well ahead of the rest of the field. Jack managed to cross the line first and a great performance from all three. Rowan was first back for the girls just a few minutes later.

Out on the 10km walk there seemed to be some odd characters with Captain America and Mr Blobby making it all the way round. Among others they were raising funds for the Gobi Desert Trek. Well done to them and all the walkers who completed the course.

Once again I’d just like to thank everyone who helped on the day or contributed towards the event and in particular the event sponsors. Thanks also to the people who live or work along the actual course for their patience as 173 runners and walkers passed by!

The event seems to get better each year and this time it’s also helped raise funds for the Tiree Pipe Band, the Duke of Edinburgh group, the PTA, the Tiree Sports Foundation and the Gobi Desert trek. Thanks everyone for making it such a fantastic day.

Have a look on the website for full results and the date for next year’s event will be announced soon.

On Saturday 29th May the island hosted the 5th annual Tiree 10km Fun Run. Over 200 people took part with ages ranging from the youngest babies pushed in prams to the eldest runners in their seventies! The day was a fantastic success with plenty of visiting runners commenting on how beautiful the island was and the friendliness with which they were received.

There was strong representation from local residents across all the events, especially in the kids fun run. The winning time for the 10km event was 36:31 by George Miller from Oxfordshire.

“That has got to be the best start for a race I’ve ever seen; on the beach with the band playing. The course was great, and I thought the event was really good.” – George Miller

The band of course were the Tiree Pipe Band. They marched the 10km in great style providing much needed encouragement to other runners and walkers. So a big thank you to them for their hard work and perseverance.

Top Finishers include:

1st – George Miller 36:31

2nd – Owain Williams 39:16

6th – Peter West (1st Veteran) 41:12

10th – Christine Milne (1st Lady) 43:28

21st – Stephen Tanner 48:46

23rd – Andrew Findlater 49:10

37th – Sarah Holliday 52:17

The competitors found the new course to Hynish more challenging than previous years, with the ups and downs and twisty roads. Despite this most people wanted to keep it the same for next year, commenting on the fantastic views and the start with everyone together on the beach.

Thank you to everyone who lives and works along this route, for your cooperation and help in staging an event like this on public roads. In the kids’ races there was a good turn out with a sprint along the beach and back again.

The evening played host to a dance with Trail West which proved to be the perfect end to a successful day. Proceeds from the dance went to Tiree Windsurf Club. “I was pleased to see the level of support shown in such an enjoyable way, helping to raise much needed funds” – Morag McManus, Club Chairperson

As ever the whole event was sponsored by local businesses. Thanks in particular to John and his team at Tiree Medical Practice, Steve at Concise Aerospace and Becci at Chocolates and Charms. Also big thanks to Andy at the Coop for donating loads of goodies for the goodie bags. Thank you to all the people who volunteered to help out on the day; the marshals, timekeepers, event crew and everybody else who contributed to make this such a positive day. If anyone has any comments or suggestions I would love to hear them.

The Tiree 10k is organized by Will Wright of Tiree Fitness in partnership with Active Schools. Will can be contacted at:
will@tireefitness.co.uk or call 220 421. Results will be posted at:Tiree Fitness’ Website

A trio of Tiree adventurers has been pounding the roads of two of our neighbouring islands.
On the 9th August, Will Wright, Joe Kavanagh and Gordon Scott set off from Tiree to take part in the Mull Half Marathon. Both Will and Gordon recorded ‘PB’s’ over the 13.1 miles as did the effervescent Joe, who was competing in the 10k walk.
Not content with this, however, the lads were off to the Isle of Coll to do it all again at the Coll Half Marathon. Will came home in 6th place in a time of 01:27, no mean feat given that the Coll route is very demanding. Once again, Joe did the 10k walk and once again he came in faster than he has done before. This time, Gordon took part in the 5k race, recording a time of 30:06 and coming in 3rd overall in a field of 16 runners.
Also running on Coll last weekend were Michael Holliday and Stephen Cameron, both of whom completed the Half Marathon is very fast times.
The evening was rounded off at the ceilidh in the village hall. Here we were entertained to yet more of what Tiree has to offer in the form of Trail West who played a blinding set and kept the audience enthralled – and dancing – all night.
