Tiree Community Shop – Update
What is a community shop?
Who owns it and how does it run?
Where does the money come from to purchase a building?
What happens to the profits?
These are just some of the questions that have been raised over the last few months since the Steering Group have been thinking about a community shop for Tiree.
It has become clear over recent weeks, and during the events held last November, that most of us don’t know much about what a community shop is and how it may benefit the island. To help us all we plan to have the next consultation day on Saturday 29th March to present the findings of the recent study that has been undertaken. Prior to the event an information booklet will be printed and distributed to every household on the island by the middle of March. This booklet will contain plenty of information including sections on:
- What is a community shop?
- Who owns and manages a community shop?
- How can the community get involved?
- Who will finance a community shop?
- What happens to the profits?
- How could the island benefit from a community shop?
We hope the booklet will help us all to consider whether a community shop would benefit Tiree – and whether we would like to see one established on the island. The consultation day will also be an opportunity to raise questions, to make our opinions known and be just one of the opportunities to cast that all important vote.
