Tiree Association sports Day

The Tiree Association Annual Sports Day took place at Tiree High School playing fields on Saturday 25th July 2015 and – thankfully – the sun shone for the afternoon’s events.

As the sports got underway competitors took to the track and, from the 25 metre Tiree toddle to the 200 metres flat races, gave it their all!! The High Jump and Long Jump were followed by the Tractor Parade which was greeted with utter delight by those in attendance.

The afternoon continued with the Heavy Events and spectators gasped in awe of Gavin Omand’s expertise in tossing the caber. The Pillow Fight and the Tug o’ War brought the afternoon’s activities to a close. The former was a veritable David v Goliath contest as, in the boys aged 12-14 contest, Kyle Campbell and his cousin Jack Brown fought it out (and on this occasion Goliath came out top!) while the latter culminated in a victory for the Tiree men against the Tiree women – although the final contest was closely fought!

Spectators then gathered in front of the tent as prizes were presented by Morag MacLeod. Many congratulations to the following: Junior Girls’ Medal – Corran Kennedy; Junior Boys’ Medal – Ewan McIntyre; Junior Challenge Cup (highest points on Junior Medal) – Ewan McIntyre; Ladies Challenge Cup – Charlotte Alford; Cameron Cup (Heavy Events) – Gavin Omand; Kennedy Trophy (Track Events) – George Bruce; Straker Cup (overall points for track and heavy events) – George Bruce.

The committee would like to thank Curam for providing sustenance during the course of the afternoon in the form of teas, coffees, cold drinks, delicious filled rolls and fantastic home baking. Thanks also to Tommy for his help with sports equipment, to the Head teacher for allowing the use of the playing fields and of course to all those who took the time to bring the tractors along for the parade. Last but not least, a huge thanks to ALL those who attended the Tiree Association Sports Day whether as a competitor or a spectator. Remember to keep an eye on the website – www.tireeassociation.co.uk for details of upcoming events in Glasgow – the first of these being our Fundraising Race Night at the Crawford Halls on 24th October 2015.
