Will Braves The Brutal
Tiree’s Will Wright, finished SECOND in ‘The Brutal Iron Man Challenge in Wales’! His time 12 hr 39 mins to do the 2.4 mile swim in the coldest lake, 112 miles of an extremely hilly bike course and a marathon which included running to the summit of Snowdon and back down.
Llanberis is the village most associated with Snowdon, or Yr Wyddfa to give it its Welsh name. Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and Lake Padarn is one of the coldest lakes in the country. On Saturday 19th of September it was home to ‘The Brutal Extreme Triathlon’.
The event started with a swim in the beautiful Lake Padarn. The bike course went through stunning scenery and over some challenging hills. And finally, the run took those racing on an undulating trail round the lake and up and down Snowdon.
Rebecca Wright, “When the boys woke this morning he had started and he hadn’t finished when they went to bed! What a daddy! To say we are proud is an understatement.”
The night before the race Will discovered that his back wheel had a broken spoke that he was unable to repair in the time available. Someone kindly gave him a back wheel – which was heavier than his own. To his great delight his brother Henry surprised Will by being at the race briefing and was a great moral support. Given coke and “Jaffa Cakes’ at the start of the run meant that Will’s tired legs felt ‘like magic’.
What an achievement!
